What is
psychiatry?

Psychiatry is the medical practice of preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental health disorders. Psychiatrists are doctors who are able to use a combination of therapy and medication to help patients manage symptoms of mental health disorders. Mental health disorders may include a variety of mood, behavior, cognition, and perception abnormalities.

Whether due to a psychotic disorder, a life trauma, or underdeveloped coping skills, mental health disorders can cause a variety of health concerns that may manifest physically and cause long-term health effects. A psychiatric assessment can help to determine if a patient is suffering from an emotional, behavioral, or developmental condition and guide the provider in the right direction for a course of treatment.

How can Psychiatry help
Sleep Disorders?

Neuropsychiatry, unlike general psychiatry, is concerned with how diseases or conditions in the nervous system affect mental health. Understanding the underlying medical conditions that may contribute to mood or behavior disorders can better guide treatment and yield better outcomes.

For instance, if you struggle with chronic fatigue and irritability related to poor sleep quality, counseling and sleep medications will do little to help your situation. However, correcting the physiological condition can help your nervous system get the oxygen and nutrients required to stimulate neurotransmitters that can help improve your sleep quality, resulting in increased energy and a more positive outlook.
